Giving thanks seems like a simple enough idea... But often we have trouble truly recognizing and acknowledging the wonderful elements of our lives. So much of the time seems to be spent focusing on our problems or shortcomings, rather than on appreciation for what we have or whom we are.
If you so choose, this week can truly be a time of giving thanks. For everything in our lives—for the fruits of all the healthy relationships and accomplishments we’ve created, as well as for the hard lessons we've learned from difficult relationships and challenging situations.
Without judgment, without right and wrong, good or bad, can you accept what is alive in your life and be grateful for all of it? Do you deserve at least that much...even if it’s just for a week? (I promise, you can go back to focusing on your problems again next week.) But for the next few days, choose to reward yourself, for all the hard work you’ve done this year—the trials and tribulations you’ve negotiated, the achievements and beautiful moments you’ve created—and just know, for a few days, that what you have IS ENOUGH and that YOU ARE ENOUGH.
Practice being thankful for a few days. Focus on what you DO have; concentrate on the great, loving, and positive parts of you and the people in your life. Take a break from your problems. Even when dealing with problems, think of them rather as lessons, opportunities, fun challenges. Instead of “problem,” set your sights on “gratitude.” Don’t you deserve a week off from your worries once in a while? And instead a week on appreciation, enjoying the company of friends and family, and just plain having some down time? We all do, no matter who we are or what we’re dealing with.
Take some time for yourself, for your friends and family, and bask in the glory of your heart and the hearts of those closest to you. At the very least, set aside the problems you’re so identified with most of the time, and just for the next few days, give yourself permission to appreciate having this truly thrilling, intriguing, and often crazy experience of being alive in this time and place in history. Happy Thanksgiving!!
AFFIRMATIONS OF THE WEEK
I am so grateful for everything in my life.
The beauty, the challenges, the love, the lessons, all of it.
Right here, right now, it’s okay for me to just relax and feel gratitude.
